Benedito Lafflin

Lafflin · Earth-Mars Coalition liaison · Present liaison of the EMC

The coalition liaison explains how recovery priorities and an ineffective blockade left humanity nearly blind to Laconia for three decades.

Story so far

Benedito Lafflin represents the Earth-Mars Coalition in the emergency meeting aboard People's Home. He explains that Laconia saturated its gate with electromagnetic noise, destroyed or disabled the few probes sent through, and otherwise showed no active threat. Earth and Mars therefore chose blockade while their damaged fleets and governments concentrated on recovering from the Free Navy war.

Lafflin admits, in effect, that the missing Martian force simply never became a priority. He also warns that any attempt to force communications through the captured gates would be monitored, and that encryption considered unbreakable against known technology cannot be trusted against Laconia's unknown systems. When Chrisjen Avasarala arrives uninvited, he tries and fails to keep her outside the restricted meeting.

Appearance

A thick-faced man with a close, tight haircut and a self-satisfied air, speaking in a reedy voice with the careful manner of a physician explaining a mistake.

Role

Lafflin is the coalition voice forced to account for the intelligence doctrine that allowed Laconia to develop unseen.

Relationships

Camina Drummer — Camina Drummer presses him until institutional explanations become an admission of long neglect.
