character

Fred Johnson

Fred · Butcher of Anderson Station · Colonel Johnson

Fred welcomes the rescue delegation, tracks the political realignment, and asks Holden for access to Naomi's knowledge of the Free Navy's Martian support.

Story so far

Aboard the Rocinante, Fred Johnson switches easily from Holden's weary adviser to the polished political figure who receives Prime Minister Smith. He remains convinced that Marco's tactical victory will fail to consolidate without a real answer to the Belt's material future, even as he and Holden acknowledge the urgency of making that answer real.

With Naomi recovered, Fred studies Free Navy piracy, the Martian ships burning for the gates, and Smith's uncertain account of naval breakdown. He suspects the stolen protomolecule sample was part of the price for the military betrayal and intends to tell Smith and Avasarala when they reach Luna. He asks Holden, rather than demands, to let him question Naomi once she is well enough to explain what she knows.

Appearance

A tall aging man with thinning gray hair and a softened once-powerful build, composed in formal greeting clothes while fatigue and old wounds remain visible.

Role

Fred is the political strategist converting scattered rescue survivors into a coalition while searching for the hidden source of the Free Navy's strength.

Protomolecule — Protomolecule is the stolen prize Fred suspects helped purchase the Martian military betrayal.
