Winston Duarte

Commander Duarte · Admiral Duarte

Duarte is revealed as the architect of a rogue Martian fleet using Marco's war as cover to reach Laconia and harness alien power.

Story so far

Winston Duarte first appears at Hecate as a courteous Martian Navy commander quietly investigating missing ships and matériel. The epilogue reveals the scale and direction of his hidden work: he has taken authority over a breakaway fleet as Mars's elected government falters, using chain-of-command discipline to send ships beyond Medina toward Laconia.

Duarte's strategy regards the Free Navy less as an ally than as a useful disruption. Marco's campaign will keep Earth and what remains of Mars occupied while Duarte positions himself to steer history. He has brought Captain Sauveterre into the fold, placed Paolo Cortázar over research, and acquired the stolen protomolecule sample for a project intended to tame an alien artifact. The Barkeith's destruction at the Laconia gate exposes a danger beyond the human plan, but Duarte himself remains distant and in command of the wider scheme.

Appearance

A compact adult Martian officer with acne-pocked cheeks, warm brown eyes, and an unassuming courteous manner; his Navy uniform and restrained presentation conceal unusual strategic ambition.

Role

Duarte is the hidden Martian commander turning military collapse, alien research, and the Free Navy's chaos into a separate bid for power.

Relationships

Sauveterre — Sauveterre follows Duarte's command into the Laconia mission and enforces the disciplined break from Mars that Duarte requires.
Paolo Cortázar — Paolo Cortázar is Duarte's chosen scientist for the protomolecule and artifact project at Laconia.
