Twilight Helm

the Twilight Helm · Fitchner's first Ares helmet

A pure-black onyxium helmet made by Quicksilver for Fitchner, capable of becoming Ares's visage but withheld by Darrow until Athena judges whether he deserves it.

Story so far

The Twilight Helm is the first and finest helmet Quicksilver made for Fitchner when he was Ares. Pure black and shaped like the starburst helm associated with Ares, it is made from onyxium, compatible with most suits, and crafted by one of Quicksilver's best artificers. Fitchner used it only a few times because its expensive appearance risked revealing that the rebellion had a wealthy backer.

Quicksilver gives the helmet to Darrow as the Archimedes prepares to leave the asteroid. Its function is literal as well as symbolic: when charged, its wearer can activate it with the words 'I am Ares.' Darrow hesitates, feeling that to claim the line before meeting the Daughters would be to steal an inheritance rather than honor it.

He takes the Helm toward the Rim but leaves it inactive. He will wait for Athena to decide whether presenting himself under Ares's face is an act of solidarity or an offense against the people harmed by his past betrayal.

Appearance

A heavy, pure-black onyxium helmet in the same starburst form as Ares's regalia, strikingly expensive in finish and designed to interface with most armored suits.

Role

The Twilight Helm is a powerful symbol of revolutionary succession whose meaning depends on whether Athena and the Daughters accept Darrow's claim to carry it.

Relationships

FitchnerBk 2 — Fitchner first owned the Helm but avoided wearing it often because Quicksilver's craftsmanship made its secret patronage too obvious.
Quicksilver — Quicksilver gives the Helm to Darrow as a last gift tied to the friend and rebellion they both lost.
Darrow — Darrow carries the Helm but refuses to activate it until its use is judged legitimate by Athena.
Athena — Athena is the person Darrow believes can determine whether the Helm should become his face when he meets the Daughters.
