A cryptic Rim spiritual book whose teachings begin to give Darrow a language for endurance beyond rage and victory.
The Path to the Vale is a tattered book that Aurae left in Darrow's space-suit helmet before departing with Cassius. Its repeated teachings describe life as an inscrutable path made of steps rather than fixed destinations, and insist that the traveler continue through both evil and joy.
Darrow initially finds its metaphors irritatingly opaque. While training in the Archimedes's sparring chamber, however, he has its first pages narrated alongside Virginia au Augustus's voice and begins to find the language familiar and consoling. He does not yet understand its doctrine, but it offers a counterweight to his exhausted appetite for vengeance.
A tattered, much-handled book small enough for Darrow to carry from his quarters to the sparring chamber. Its text is arranged as numbered spiritual understandings.
The book is a quiet moral instrument in Darrow's recovery from Mercury, brought into the story through Aurae's care.
