Atlas confirms that he captured, mutilated, and kills the real Helios after extracting the Sungrave defense codes from him.
Helios au Lux is the veteran Rim consul and rightful master of the Dustmaker whose face and biological material Atlas used to enter the ship at Kalyke. The false return gave Atlas the Cestus, the bridge, and the opening to destroy Dido's flagship and cripple the Rim Armada.
Ten days later, Lysander sees the real Helios alive but grotesquely mutilated aboard the Lethe. His arms have been amputated, his eyes extracted, and wires run from his head to a Green who verifies the codes for Sungrave's defense grid. Atlas confirms that taking Helios alive was difficult and that the daughter's kitari was the clue that exposed the disguise.
Once the codes are sent to Fá, Atlas says Helios's duty is done. Yellows inject him, and his chest rises twice before falling still. The false consul's fate is now certain: Helios dies as a source of access in the plan to destroy the home and people he served.
A battle-hardened older Gold, seen at the end naked and brutally mutilated in a medical room: both arms amputated, eyes taken, and his head wired to an interrogation interface. These are captivity injuries, not his canonical living appearance.
Helios's captured body is Atlas's key to the Rim's military systems, and his death marks the personal cost of the strategy that has already wrecked its fleet.
