character

Lysander

Lysander au Lune · the Light Bringer · Imperator

Lysander sacks the Garter into a starvation weapon, frees Pytha and Cassius's body, elevates Kyber, and sails home holding Eidmi's fourteen Color-marked cubes.

Story so far

Lysander oversees the Sack of Demeter with the composure of a businessman. He values harvested plum trees, seed banks, growers, and genetic samples as a means to make Mercury's Waste of Ladon feed Luna, while the fire he has started consumes Io's fields. To Cicero, who watches growers remain with named trees, Lysander argues that the act must feel monstrous or they would be monsters, then calls it necessary because the Raa must be made hungry enough to submit. His ambition has narrowed from unity by persuasion to unity by control of the stomach.

Lysander honors the smallest remnants of feeling on his own terms. He does not destroy Archimedes, frees Pytha with Cassius's body, gives the dead Morning Knight the Ares helm and a white tunic, and allows the ship to depart for the Republic—confident that her knowledge gives him future traps. He makes Kyber Dux, claiming to purge the guard of Gorgon corruption. When a combined Volk-Daughters fleet appears with Pandora as flagship, he chooses to sail home with his spoils rather than risk a boarding fight. Alone, he opens Eidmi and finds fourteen golden cubes marked for Colors. He takes out the Red and Gold cubes and considers which Silenius would use first.

Appearance

A young Gold man with punctured cheek, damaged arm, and other visible hangar wounds, dressed in command uniform amid ash. The wounds are acute; his demeanor is now colder and settled.

Role

Lysander is the self-appointed architect of peace who now treats famine, wealth, and a Color-targeting weapon as tools of sovereign power.

Relationships

Cicero — Cicero is disturbed by the sack, and Lysander recruits his good heart into the promise of a future built after necessary horror.
Pytha — Pytha is released with Cassius's body rather than killed, a mercy Lysander also treats as an opportunity for future manipulation.
Kyber — Kyber is raised to Dux after securing Lysander's purge, becoming the Gray face of a supposedly purified guard.
Eidmi — Eidmi reveals fourteen golden Color-marked cubes, and Lysander begins considering Red and Gold as possible first targets.
