character

Lysander

Lysander au Lune · the young Lune · the Sunborn · blood of Silenius the Lightbringer · Iron Gold

Moved by Romulus's death and final charge, he claims his purpose at last—an Iron Gold shepherd who pledges to Dido's war and to unite Gold against the Reaper.

Story so far

Witness to Romulus's death and his charge to become the echo of Silenius and Akari, Lysander finds the foundation he has lacked since Octavia fell. Comforting Seraphina on the dune and then facing the grief-hollowed Dido, he answers the question he has asked himself for a decade—'What am I?' Not a king without a kingdom, not his tyrant grandmother, not Aja or his godfather, but an Iron Gold: made, like all Golds, to shepherd and unite a chaotic mankind into order. He pledges himself to Dido's war and proposes his role: send him to the Core with a cohort to find his godfather, carry word that the Rim is coming, that past sins must be forgotten, and that they seek an alliance to unite Gold against the Reaper—'if peace must be brought with a sword, let us hold it together.' Feeling the culmination of all who shaped him—his father's calm, Aja's love, Octavia's brilliance, Cassius's honor, his mother's faint heartbeat—he watches Dido's grieving face slowly curl into a smile of assent.

Appearance

A slender young man of twenty, delicate patrician face, straight gold hair, pale yellow-crystal eyes; his crushed left hand healing, in kryll and scorosuit against the frozen waste, bearing a new-found certainty.

Role

POV protagonist; the Lune heir who claims his identity as an Iron Gold and binds himself to the Rim's war to unite Gold against Darrow.

Relationships

Romulus — The Moon Lord whose death and charge give him at last the purpose to unite Gold.
Dido — The Protector to whose war he pledges himself, winning her assent to sail to the Core for an alliance.
Seraphina — The princess he comforts in grief, his fellow in the war to come.
