Psyche

the parasite · the Figment's device

The damaged neurobionic prototype is surgically removed from Lyria and destroyed at her insistence, ending its promise of power without sacrificing her memories.

Story so far

The psyche was the damaged neurobionic device that entered Lyria after the Figment's death. Its potential was immense—machine command, enhanced body and mind, and access to linked systems—but its repair threatened to alter the explicit memories through which Lyria held her family and losses. She refused that bargain even when stranded in Matteo's asteroid refuge.

Matteo performs the maximally invasive removal. Lyria spends weeks recovering from the neurological disruption and then completes a final grid test that demonstrates her emotional memories and personality remain her own. Though the device's absence leaves a phantom sense of the security and grand destiny it once promised, she identifies it as an alien presence rather than part of herself.

At Matteo's direction, Lyria personally draws the command that destroys the inert psyche. Harsh light reduces its tiny core and thousands of translucent tendrils to liquid metal that drains away. Its technological threat and opportunity are over for her; the freedom it leaves is ordinary, precarious, and wholly Lyria's.

Appearance

A tiny flat core with thousands of translucent tendrils like a halo of angel hair, inert in a metal basin after removal from Lyria's head before it melts into liquid metal.

Role

The psyche is the rejected shortcut to power whose destruction confirms that Lyria will pursue Volga as herself rather than as a machine-made weapon.

Relationships

Lyria — Lyria survives the psyche's removal with her memories intact and personally destroys it rather than risk letting its power define her.
Matteo — Matteo removes and tests the psyche, then gives Lyria—not himself—the final choice to destroy it.
Quicksilver — Quicksilver once financed the project that produced the psyche, a legacy his refuge now helps Lyria finally end.
