character

Dido

Dido au Raa · Dido au Saud · Lady Raa · the Rim consul

Dido is killed when Atlas, posing as Helios, fires the Dustmaker point-blank into the unshielded Dragon Song during the Kalyke ambush.

Story so far

Dido is Romulus's widow and the Rim's formidable political voice, a leader who demanded that the Core honor its promises and eventually chose to back Lysander's campaign rather than submit to Atalantia's rule. When Fá threatens Ilium, she returns with the Dragon Armada to defend the Rim beside Diomedes and Helios.

At Kalyke, Dido oversees the contraction that will hide the combined armada for its ghost sail. Believing Helios's reconnaissance has cleared the approach, she allows the Dragon Song to sit close above the Dustmaker with its shields down and its thermal signature quiet. Her final communication is a practical question to the apparent Helios about the ship's reactor and enemy reports.

Atlas answers by naming her a traitor to the Society and firing the Dustmaker's heavy rail slugs and atomics directly into the Dragon Song's unshielded belly. The third salvo breaks the dreadnaught's superstructure and destroys its buried bridge. Dido dies without the chance to warn her fleet, and her murder is the opening blow in the ruin of the armada she helped bring home.

Appearance

A profoundly handsome Gold woman with strong features, penetrating mischievous eyes, and thick dark-golden hair. She appears by bridge hologram in Rim command attire, composed even when Atlas pronounces sentence.

Role

Dido's death removes the Rim's senior political leader at the instant its armada is betrayed from within.

Relationships

Diomedes — Diomedes is Dido's son and commander; he is paralyzed aboard the Dustmaker and does not know that the ambush has killed her.
Atlas — Atlas uses the identity of Helios to deceive Dido, declares her condemned, and personally orders the salvo that destroys her bridge.
Dragon Song — The Dragon Song is Dido's flagship, rendered fatally vulnerable when its shields remain down for the fleet's stealth maneuver.
