Parting of the Shadow

Expiation of Fear

An ancient Rim rite of confessed fear turns Lysander's coalition into a public symbol of unity—until Diomedes's impossible return fractures its planned certainty.

Story so far

The Parting of the Shadow is a Rim ritual, also called the Expiation of Fear, first performed by Akari and his companions before their descent on Earth. Knights kneel, confess their deepest fears before their ancestors, and use the admission to make themselves brave and sharpen their intent. At Plutus, 406 Rim Peerless and 1,100 Core knights join it, an extraordinary act of shared ceremony after centuries in which Core knights have not participated.

Lysander treats Gaia's invitation as proof that his promised unity has become real. Confessions range from cowardice and the fear of dying unseen to Gaia's dread that her people will remain enslaved forever; Lysander gives a carefully partial confession about chaos and Gold division while concealing fear of Atalantia, Atlas, Cassius, Darrow, and exposure. The ceremony is interrupted by the arrival of the supposedly dead Diomedes, whose return transforms the assembled knights' solemnity into ecstatic hope and opens the path to a private encounter Lysander cannot control.

Appearance

Hundreds of armored Rim and Core knights kneel in golden wheat west of Plutus beneath the artificial suns of the Garter, rising one by one to name their fear.

Role

The rite is the ceremonial foundation of Lysander's joint Rim-Core offensive, and its emotional power makes Diomedes's return politically explosive.

Relationships

Lysander — Lysander participates to cement his public role as the hope unifying Core and Rim, while withholding the fears that could expose him.
Gaia au Raa — Gaia au Raa invites the Core contingent into the rite and confesses her grief for Rim people carried into bondage.
Diomedes — Diomedes interrupts the ceremony by returning alive, becoming the resurrected Rim champion before both armies.
