Havelock

Dmitri Havelock · Detective Havelock

Miller's former partner whose dangerous off-record warning confirms Thoth Station as Protogen's hidden deep-research site and supplies its coordinates.

Story so far

Havelock responds to Miller through an encrypted Ganymede-server dead drop after the OPA violence on Ceres makes their old partnership politically fraught. He looks healthier and more affluent than he did on Ceres, but admits that Protogen is frightening: its people are troops rather than ordinary contract security, and his status as an Earther makes it safer to be accepted by men who despise Belters. He has adapted to the company environment without wholly becoming part of it.

Off the record, Havelock confirms that Protogen maintains a discreet black-operations research and development site in the Belt, heavy on scientists and automated defenses but not large ground forces. He supplies coordinates for the site, which may be Thoth Station, while warning that leaking them could get him killed. Miller returns the favor with a stronger warning: Protogen was involved in Eros, and Havelock should leave if possible and refuse any assignment to the black site. Their exchange preserves loyalty, but both men sense that it may be their final contact.

Appearance

Havelock is a squat, thick-handed Earth-born middle-aged man with a broad build, a healthier jawline and face, and darker skin that may reflect cosmetic treatment or false sunlight. He wears well-kept corporate security clothing.

Role

Havelock is Miller's endangered inside source, loyal enough to reveal the Protogen site even while working among the people who would kill him for it.

Relationships

Miller — Havelock gives Miller the Thoth coordinates at enormous personal risk, and receives a warning that Protogen's Eros work is worse than he knows.
Protogen — Havelock remains a Protogen security contractor and recognizes that its personnel behave like troops rather than ordinary guards.
Thoth Station — Havelock identifies Thoth Station as a discreet Protogen deep-research site with heavy automation and a small ground complement.
