Mars's vast flagship, which takes the Knight survivors aboard and immediately faces an impossible close-range attack.
The MCRN Donnager retrieves the Knight crew after James Holden publicly connects the Canterbury's destruction to Martian equipment. Nearly five hundred meters long and 250,000 tons dry, it overwhelms the little shuttle with targeting lasers, a docking bay, and absolute control of the encounter. Captain Theresa Yao receives the survivors as potential witnesses and suspects, then warns Holden that the six pursuing ships will be torpedoed unless they break away.
The pursuers ignore the deadline, survive the Donnager's torpedo barrage, and fire back. The flagship goes to general quarters, opens point-defense guns against incoming torpedoes, and is struck hard enough to lose thrust. It begins firing gauss cannons in a close-quarters battle at ranges unimaginable for capital ships. A round breaches the survivors' compartment and kills Shed Garvey, proving that even the Donnager's enormous power cannot keep them safe.
The Donnager is a blocky, flat-black Martian capital ship built like an office tower laid on its side, nearly five hundred meters long. Bulbous external projections, red-lit docking bays, massive manipulators, and unnervingly unseen defensive weapons make it feel more intimidating than elegant.
The Donnager is the survivors' temporary refuge, Martian interrogator, and suddenly embattled fortress.
