An alien adaptive instruction system that may be using Eros's population as distributed computational biomass for a purpose still beyond human understanding.
The Protomolecule has transformed Julie Mao, the stealth ship's captives, and Eros's population through dark fluid, invasive filaments, and wholesale reorganization of living tissue. Protogen understands enough to call it an alien technology and test it, but not enough to control or explain its eventual purpose.
Naomi Nagata offers a new working theory during the Rocinante's run to Tycho. If the substance is an engineered system trying to perform something complex, its local processing capacity may be insufficient; distributed biomass could let it become smarter enough to finish the task it was designed for. Eros therefore provides a sealed test tube with a vast human substrate, while the surrounding war offers both cover and a ready excuse to sterilize the station if the result becomes visibly dangerous. Fred finds the logic horrifying because it requires genocidal intent, but it makes the observed transformation more coherent. The theory remains inference, not proof of what the protomolecule will finally do.
The protomolecule manifests through dark brown or black fluid, glassy amber residue in vacuum, black filaments, invasive tubes, altered bone and flesh, gill-like structures, and bodies reorganized into unfamiliar organic forms.
The protomolecule is an alien technology whose human-scale experiment may be building capacity for an unknown function rather than simply spreading disease.
