Silo Eighteen, Juliette’s underground home, has been shut down; Charlotte reports that a handful of inhabitants escaped to another silo.
The Silo housed thousands of people in a buried cylinder of apartments, workshops, hydroponic gardens and purification rooms, divided into three sections of forty-eight floors. Its stairs connected daily life across the levels. The missing ancestral past troubled residents: Jahns said surviving records did not reach beyond the uprising, while priests taught that a caring God had created the silo and that it had always existed. Bernard Holland identified it to Silo One as Silo Eighteen.
Its history includes unusually severe generational revolts recurring every fifteen to twenty years. In an earlier crisis, Anna Thurman wanted to save it from termination, and Donald believed lingering memories explained the failure of its resets. The choice between another reset and extermination led into a deliberately instigated reset, with bombings and fighting. Later, the report of a cleaner disappearing beyond the hill and a failed scheduled cleaning again raised fears of uprising. Resistance brought strict rationing and a bloodied stairway; fighting during Juliette’s absence left extensive damage. After news of her return, Lukas reported that more than half the silo had voted, and Juliette proposed opposing the informed leaders who controlled the silos.
Juliette’s excavation broke through the thick outer wall into a dark void. Although the silo rose two places in the rankings, Marsha reported a population below five thousand for the first time in thirty years. It still had steady lights, operating machinery and crowds when Jimmy and the children arrived. Juliette then announced that it would sever its external connections. Paul Thurman announced its shutdown, and a caller ordered that shutdown after questioning Lukas. The radio repeaters continued working after the disaster, but Charlotte understood that only a handful of people had escaped over the hills to another silo. Juliette told Tom Higgins that their silo was gone; Charlotte now explicitly reports that Eighteen has been shut down.
A buried cylindrical structure with even its uppermost floor underground. It has three sections of forty-eight floors, a shared staircase, and an outer wall roughly five or six feet thick, containing two rows of reinforcing bars.
Former home of Juliette and thousands of residents, now shut down. Its surviving escapees are separated from the community and infrastructure they once depended on.
