Jahns was the long-serving mayor who recruited Juliette as sheriff and died after drinking poison intended for Marnes.
As mayor, Jahns carried out the cleaning laws despite taking no pleasure in sending people outside. She told Holston that she did not want him sacrificed merely for a clearer view, and later wanted him remembered for his service. After his death she offered the sheriff’s job to Marnes, then traveled with him to assess Juliette in person. The journey took her far below the levels she had frequented for years and renewed her sense of purpose. She questioned Juliette’s father about their estrangement, resisted Bernard Holland’s interference and feared his influence over the silo’s leadership.
Jahns admired Juliette’s ingenuity and agreed to arrange a power holiday so that the generator could be repaired before Juliette took office. She wanted closer communication with Mechanical and promised to seek waivers for supplies Juliette had diverted. Along the journey, her longstanding feelings for Marnes became an openly affectionate relationship. She had spent decades alone after her husband’s death; she and Marnes kissed, slept in one another’s arms and held hands during the dark stretches of the climb home. Jahns began to imagine renewed political possibilities, including Juliette as a future mayor.
After drinking from the canteen Marnes carried, Jahns became desperately ill at the nursery. She told him she had loved him for as long as she could remember and realized the water contained poison intended for him. She died, and the unintended killing was legally treated as manslaughter. Juliette later remembers the poisoning as tied to the IT level. Jahns’s recruitment of her remains a defining part of the former mayor’s legacy.
She was the mayor who selected Juliette as sheriff despite opposition; her poisoning preceded the struggle over the silo’s leadership.
