Story so far
Lucia Merton, the colony's doctor, recovers her sight along with the camp — though she looks as bad as Holden sounded, ashy-skinned with bloodshot eyes, her son Jacek shadowing her with a medical scanner and a sack of bandages. She reports the cure a near-total success: only three patients aren't responding, an excellent rate for a novel treatment of a novel illness, though no one is back to baseline. She marks the small mercy of clouds thinning to a patch that was 'actually white,' but has no illusions — they've merely 'traded up from dying in the storm to dying from the slugs to dying of hunger in a few weeks,' the native ecology being inedible and the ships falling.
She watches the tribal divisions between RCE and First Landers resurface now the shared danger has eased, and is snubbed by Murtry (still the wife of a shuttle-bomb conspirator to him). Elvi calls it a way 'not to lose' rather than winning; Lucia knows they can't keep pushing the crisis back forever.
Appearance
A severe-beautiful woman with black-dotted dark cheeks and black-and-white hair, gaunt; here wrecked by the plague — ashy skin, whites of her eyes shockingly pink — moving with a slight delay.
Role
The colony's physician; the recovering clinician who confirms the cure worked and names starvation as the next death waiting.
Relationships
Elvi Okoye — The scientist she reports the cure's success to, sharing the grim truth that they've only bought weeks.
Jacek Merton — Her young son who shadows her rounds, carrying her scanner and bandages.
Adolphus Murtry — The chief who still snubs her as a conspirator's wife even as the plague recedes.
