Elvi Okoye

Elvi guides the dying Miller into the dead spot, fights off waking machines, then carries a 90-kilo blue unit into the darkness — unmade and reassembled atom by atom — and switches the planet off. 'We won.'

Story so far

Elvi Okoye becomes the hero of the hour. Since only she can see the dead spot, she guides the Miller-robot to its edge for his plan: connect to every system on the planet and drag them all into the darkness that kills networks like him — knowing it will end him too. He springs in but is set upon by the control center's waking machines; Elvi, howling, snatches up a fallen winged mechanism and broken robot limbs and fights beside him, knocking attackers into the dead spot, keeping the giant claws off him long enough for Miller to burrow up and gut them.

Mortally broken, unable to reach the dead spot himself, Miller pops his seals and has her dig out the thing inside — a slick, ninety-kilo, meter-long blue unit with eight dots. Told it may well kill her, she says she'll carry it in anyway. She hauls it across the near-frictionless floor as a swarm floods the doorway, falls forward into the darkness — and is unmade: cells to molecules to atoms to 'a vibration in nothingness,' watching herself dissolve — then reassembles on the far side, alive.

All around, the artifacts of New Terra lie dead, a million tiny mechanisms switched off at once. The defenses are gone. When Holden calls, 'Did we win?', she answers through tears of terror and exultation: 'Yes.

We won.'

Appearance

A dark-skinned Nigerian-raised woman in her thirties, starved and mud-caked; here bloodied, palms cut and burning from robot fluids, back and arms spent, weeping — reassembled whole after passing through the dead spot.

Role

POV exobiologist; the improbable warrior-scientist who guides Miller's sacrifice, carries the unit through the dead spot, and shuts down the planet's defense grid.

Relationships

Miller — The dying construct she guides, fights for, and whose final component she carries into the dead spot to end the defenses.
Holden — The captain she answers with 'We won' once the artifacts fall dead and the ships are freed.
Ilus — The machine-world she switches off from its dead heart, passing bodily through the killing darkness to do it.

Chapter 3
  • RCE exobiologist thrilled to study the first alien biosphere, who survives the shuttle crash to find herself among the very squatters blamed for it.
Chapter 8
  • Exobiologist in her element studying [[Ilus]]'s alien life, humiliated at a colony meeting for suggesting the settlers are doing everything wrong.
Chapter 10
  • Chasing a light into the alien ruins to stop 'contamination,' Elvi instead finds the settlers' hidden cache of explosives — and reports it to [[Reeve]].
Chapter 16
  • Debriefed by Murtry and starstruck meeting Holden, Elvi pours out the planet's deadly strangeness — and is warned not to fall for the mediator.
Chapter 19
  • Elvi rides out with Holden to the power spike and finds a dying billion-year-old alien machine harvesting the land — then a tender, mortifying night watch beside him.
Chapter 23
  • Haunted by dreams of Holden and the fear-chilled town, Elvi manufactures reasons to see him and ends up drinking with the grieving Lucia and a terrified Fayez.
Chapter 28
  • Waking to a melting moon, Elvi talks an armed Jacek down from killing Holden, then lays out her chilling theory: the waking machines are failures, so far more must be waking right, unseen.
Chapter 31
  • Elvi realizes the 'butterflies' are machines of a third biome, then confronts a boy going blind from a rainwater organism — and breaks down warning Holden the whole planet is racing toward crisis.
Chapter 33
  • In the evacuation, Elvi thinks past panic — hauling blankets against the coming cold and saving the chemical deck because it can distill drinking water when the bottles run out.
Chapter 34
  • Elvi endures the 16-hour storm huddled in the ruins, grieves the annihilated ecosystem, reaches for Holden's comfort, and wakes beside Fayez to learn First Landing is simply gone.
Chapter 35
  • Elvi identifies the new worm-slugs' slime as a killing neurotoxin, frays at having no lab to study it, and coolly corrects Murtry's blame over the lost dome.
Chapter 39
  • Elvi catches Holden — awkwardly calling him 'Jim' — with a new horror on top of all the others: in about four days the entire colony will go blind.
Chapter 40
  • Elvi explains the blindness plague to Holden, is undone by her crush on him, and — after Fayez talks her down and offers himself — sleeps with Fayez, waking clear-headed and cracking the organism.
Chapter 42
  • Going blind herself, Elvi races the plague, learns Holden alone is immune, and — after a mortifying cross-purposes talk — makes him her key to a cure, finding fierce joy in the hardest work of her life.
Chapter 43
  • Nearly blind, Elvi walks the immune Holden through reading his own blood panels aloud, still hunting a 'needle in a complex organism' with almost no time left.
Chapter 46
  • Fully blind now, Elvi cracks the plague: Holden's chronic anti-cancer oncocidals kill the fast-dividing organism — his meds are the cure for everyone's blindness.
Chapter 49
  • Elvi confirms the cure is working — the dead organism no longer refracts light, sight returning in hours to days — then finally beds down the collapsing Holden.
Chapter 52
  • Sight returning, Elvi rigs a water still, then trades Amos the trick to power a cart for a seat north — not chasing Holden but craving to see the ruined world before she dies.
Chapter 56
  • Reaching the vast alien power-plant, Elvi watches Murtry's ambush cut down Wei and Amos; when Fayez tackles the killer and screams for her to run, she sprints into the dark to find Holden.
Chapter 58
  • Triangulating Holden's position from network lag, Elvi finds him and the Miller-bot, is sent to shut off the defenses — and discovers she alone can see the dead spot: 'the eye of an angry God.'
Chapter 60
  • Elvi guides the dying Miller into the dead spot, fights off waking machines, then carries a 90-kilo blue unit into the darkness — unmade and reassembled atom by atom — and switches the planet off. 'We won.'
