The Crane

the five-legged crane

Good for exactly one more foot of lift, after which the job goes to a line of crawlers holding a chain by hand.

Story so far

The improvised crane holding The Def Leppard Cart over the escape hatch turns out to have very little margin. To execute Li Na's plan the cart has to come up enough for someone to lean in, and one additional foot is all it will give — just barely enough for Princess Donut. The last of the lift is done by muscle: a group of crawlers detaches the chain holding the cart up and holds it themselves, with Carl threatening each and every one of them personally not to drop it prematurely.

When Donut is clear they groan the cart back down and he locks the upper chain and secures the lower one.

Appearance

A five-legged improvised crane of scavenged parts with train wheels for pulleys, straddling a hole in a station floor.

Role

The rig that holds the plug in place, and a one-foot margin the whole plan depended on.

Relationships

The Def Leppard Cart — Suspends it nose-down over the hatch.
Chain-Making Scroll — Its chains came from these.
Princess Donut — The extra foot of lift was for her.
