Guthrie

The gut-shot Pinkwater merc who nearly dies in the retreat, kept alive by Amos and carried out to capture.

Story so far

Gut-shot in the assault on the shadow base, Guthrie fails fast during Holden's panicked retreat — a red bubble of blood inflating at his nostril with each ragged breath — and collapses, nearly dragging the injured Wendell down. Holden, in protomolecule terror, is ready to leave him; Amos refuses, breaking out the medkit and hitting him with an injection that steadies his breathing. Unable to walk, Guthrie is carried out by Wendell and others through the riot-choked corridors.

He is still alive, borne to the Weeping Somnambulist airlock, when the gray-armored Earthers spring their ambush and the whole group is captured.

Appearance

A Pinkwater merc in light armor, gravely gut-wounded and struggling to breathe, a small red bubble of blood forming and collapsing at his left nostril; unconscious and carried.

Role

Wounded Pinkwater soldier whose survival becomes the test that pulls Holden back from abandoning his people.

Relationships

Amos Burton — Who refuses to leave him, injects him, and keeps him alive.
