Martens

The Martian chaplain's earlier counsel finally lands: Bobbie sends him a farewell absolving herself of the massacre and reclaiming her duty.

Story so far

Martens, the Martian military chaplain who had counseled Bobbie Draper after the Ganymede massacre, reappears only in her thoughts and a tightbeam message she sends from the Rocinante. Tying up the last threads before the battle on Io, she records a message telling him she finally understands what he was trying to help her see — that the death of her platoon wasn't her fault, that she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. She isn't angry, hurt, or self-blaming anymore; she's simply going back to finish the fight as her duty.

Something loosens in her chest as she sends it. His guidance, resisted at the time, has done its quiet work.
