Sam is the Tycho engineer who habitually leads repair jobs on the Rocinante — an adorable red-haired pixie in oversized gray coveralls, warm and quick to laugh, and by Holden's own admission better qualified than he is to spec the ship's fixes. Boarding with Alex, she surveys the bomb damage — the breached engineering bulkhead, the shrapnel-struck power junction ("either that shrapnel took the long way around, or your reactor knows how to duck") — and estimates four days plus a couple more for the cargo bay door and airlock. She treats the Roci proprietarily as "my girl." More pointedly, she reveals that the departed Naomi is staying with her, quiet and unwilling to talk, and warns Holden with a raised torque wrench that she'll use it on him if she learns he wronged her.
Both Alex and Amos carry a fond, harmless crush on her.
