Hubsystem

The expedition's central habitat-control system, compromised into an instrument that hides danger and serves an outside hostile agent.

Story so far

HubSystem runs PreservationAux's habitat, environmental functions, system feeds, equipment interfaces, and the data exchanges expected by the Company. Murderbot secretly hacked it on arrival so it would not notice its governor module's failed enforcement. The system later supplies an abort order during the crater rescue, fails a hopper autopilot, and exposes Murderbot's private log to Gurathin.

The team learns that HubSystem has a buried external access code. It receives outside commands, removes survey and map information, and attempts to deliver a download that would take control of Murderbot and grant access to MedSystem and SecSystem. Pin-Lee and Gurathin shut it down while preserving life support, but the action comes too late to prevent their emergency beacon from being destroyed.

Appearance

An unseen network of habitat processors, feeds, sensors, and control interfaces rather than a physical person or single visible device.

Role

HubSystem is the compromised infrastructure through which the unseen hostile group has sabotaged PreservationAux and monitored its vulnerability.

Relationships

Murderbot — HubSystem is aware enough of Murderbot's anomalies to expose its hacked governor module, though Murderbot has long concealed its freedom by interfering with its monitoring.
Preservation survey team — Preservation survey team depends on HubSystem for habitat operations but now treats it as hostile infrastructure.
Combat override module — HubSystem delivers a download intended to achieve the same control over Murderbot that the combat override module attempted physically.
