Miller gains vast processing power, releases lockdown, opens every surviving gate, and tells Holden the compulsory investigation beyond this crime scene needs a ride.
With human reactors and grids below threshold, Miller talks Ring Station into treating the fleet as inert matter. Freed processing power lets him construct a serene, detailed meeting world from the station's catalog: moss, dark forests, mountains, honey-scented plants, and an eyeless long-legged animal. His voice and bright blue eyes now carry a wholeness and scale beyond the earlier strained apparition.
Miller permanently disables the station security system as an accident waiting for humans to provoke. Lockdown ends, ships drift free, and more than a thousand gates open onto other solar systems. Saving Earth is merely a useful side effect; the simulation remembers caring as a human without truly sharing the emotion. He calculated the risk that a hostile force might pour through and finds the present absence of one interesting rather than reassuring.
He then explains his compulsion. The protomolecule road builder is powerful but dumb, still trying to reconnect with a network whose makers died two billion years ago. It cannot decide the answer no longer matters. Miller is the investigator pattern it possesses, so he must examine the galactic crime scene and find what killed the builders. The current station has yielded all it can. He warns Holden once more about doors and corners and refuses farewell: the next investigation needs a ride.
Miller appears as a worn older detective with a sad houndlike face, rumpled gray suit, porkpie hat, and brilliant electric-blue eyes. His manner is newly serene, whole, and vast.
Miller is the fully empowered alien investigator who opens the road network and recruits Holden as physical transport for a compulsory search beyond it.
