character

James Holden

Holden · Jim · Captain Holden · Cap · Cap'n · professional symbol · resistance witness · command assault · El Tee

Holden witnesses every surviving gate open, learns Miller needs him for the next investigation, and returns to a dark bridge where Clarissa has saved everyone.

Story so far

When Clarissa crashes the grid, Holden drops into another Miller simulation: naked on the mossy plain of a cataloged alien world beneath a starless sky. Miller confirms that the human fleet fell below the station's threshold. He persuaded it to classify humanity as dirt and rocks, permanently killed its security system, released the ships, and opened more than a thousand surviving gates. Each now reveals another star system. No invading monsters appear yet, though Miller never treated that danger as a joke.

The prospect restores Holden's optimism. Humanity may spread to new worlds, escape population restrictions, and begin a golden age. Miller warns again about doors and corners: an ancient galactic war ended with the builders exterminated, and no one knows what waits beyond. The investigator did not help humanity from compassion. The road-building protomolecule still follows its dead makers' instruction to reconnect and discover what happened; Miller supplies the investigative mind it lacked. He cannot abandon the task any more than a programmed ship can ignore a course because its passenger dies. He tells Holden the next step requires a ride.

Holden returns to darkness and a suddenly halted gunfight. Cortez orders everyone to stop. Holden announces that lockdown is over and power may return. On the bridge, Ashford twitches after a taser strike while Cortez treats Clarissa's gunshot. Naomi begins restoring systems and calling the studio and Rocinante. Learning Clarissa caused the saving blackout, Holden dryly admits he is glad they did not space her.

Appearance

Holden has brown eyes, an earnest squint, early jowls, and an exhausted face. He wears an environment suit on the dark bridge; in Miller's simulation he appears without clothing on an alien plain.

Role

Holden becomes humanity's witness to the opened gate network and Miller's required transport for investigating the builders' ancient killer.

Relationships

Miller — Miller shows him the opened network, admits human survival was incidental, and says the investigation now requires Holden to provide a ride.
Clarissa Mao — He finds Clarissa Mao wounded beside the sabotage that saved the fleet and acknowledges the value of having spared her.
Naomi Nagata — He sends Naomi Nagata to restore contact with the separated family and the wounded broadcast defenders.
Ring Station — He learns Ring Station is off lockdown and its dangerous security system has been permanently disabled.
The Ring — The opening of The Ring now connects Sol to more than a thousand gates and their unknown worlds.
