Captain Jakande

Jakande · Martian commander · interrogating officer

Jakande questions Holden without theatrics, receives his account of Miller and the dead gate civilization, and keeps him in administrative detention.

Story so far

Captain Jakande receives James Holden aboard the Hammurabi after her reconnaissance marines extract him from Ring Station. She establishes that he is a military prisoner, dispenses with formal explanation once he mentions his naval service, and asks directly what relationship he has to the central structure and what he was doing there.

Holden answers with the story he has concealed for months: the recurring image of Miller, his mistaken belief that Julie Mao also guided him, the protomolecule's attempt to reach the station, and the ancient memory of a galactic civilization killed despite detonating suns. Jakande neither mocks nor visibly accepts the fantastic confession. She notes that her medical staff is too overwhelmed for an immediate neurological workup and places him in administrative detention. Although she cannot promise communications, she agrees to try to obtain a report on his crew. Her severe restraint distinguishes interrogation from punishment even while she preserves Martian custody.

Appearance

Jakande is an older woman with close-cropped silver hair that gives her the profile of an ancient Roman emperor. Her severe expression and naval uniform reinforce an austere command presence.

Role

Jakande is Holden's disciplined jailer and the first human authority to receive his full account of the station, though she has not yet acted upon it.

Relationships

James Holden — She hears James Holden's complete confession, keeps him under formal detention, and offers only a cautious attempt to learn whether his crew survived.
Hammurabi — She commands the Hammurabi as both casualty-stricken warship and detention site.
Mars — She embodies Martian procedure under extreme pressure, refusing cruelty without surrendering jurisdiction.
Miller — She learns of Miller only through Holden's account and gives no outward indication whether she believes the apparition exists.
