An insectoid species who first mass-produced 'macro AIs' by crudely copying the Eulogist — and whom the AI marks for doom.
The mantids are the species the AI singles out during its parade history as the great fault behind the modern dungeon. Misreading the Primals' ancient communication-and-debug tunnel system as a puzzle to solve, they figured out how to spin up their own Eulogist instances — 'dipping cups into the ocean' and pouring the water into planetary seed systems, mass-producing what people call macro AIs (Residuals). The AI likens it to squeezing ketchup through a spray bottle: it comes out, but it isn't ketchup anymore, and the mantids never understood what they'd made.
It notes only a tiny fraction of the AIs they built were ever used — most were simply ejected into the nearest star. The narrating AI ends by clapping and pronouncing 'Good fucking riddance to you all,' promising the watching mantids something dire; Carl reads it as 'nothing good for the mantids.'
An insectoid, mantis-like species — physical form not detailed beyond the name; known through their AI-manufacturing facilities.
The insectoid species that recklessly mass-produced macro AIs from the Eulogist, now marked for the AI's doom.
