The Rust Parlay

the parlay with King Rust · the bubble meeting

The battlefield parley where King Rust reveals the failsafe plot and trades an army withdrawal for Carl's plea.

Story so far

Under paired shield bubbles on the Plains of Larracos, Carl and Princess Donut meet King Rust face to face. The adjutants Baroness Victory and Judge Deng Bao withdraw outside the bubbles to watch Princess Formidable's broadcast on a tablet, leaving the crawlers alone with a weeping, unravelling orc king. Inside the bubble no chat works at all — not even between Carl and Donut — and the game interface malfunctions, though Carl's non-game implants still function.

Rust confesses that his daughter will trigger The Failsafe within five hours, describes the galactic catastrophe that will follow, and asks Carl to plead with her on behalf of Earth. Carl negotiates rather than refuses. The resulting deal is simple: Rust orders the armies to withdraw to their line, the crawlers will not harass the retreat, and every remaining leader gets a few free hours to record farewell messages. Rust says nothing when the terms are settled — he just turns and walks away. The bubble pops, Carl's missed messages flood in, and moments later Rosetta kills Rust and the truce dies before the armies can move.

Role

The negotiation that briefly ends the land war and is undone by an assassination within minutes.
