Damned Status

Damned · The Damned

A hard-to-obtain condition that grants entry to any church in the universe, exploited to crack Khepri's faith-gated door.

Story so far

Universal law requires churches to maintain their status by sheltering anybody who asks, provided they are not known adherents of a rival faith. Tipid said the law is widely ignored without consequence, but the tradition was written into the game: an NPC or crawler flagged as "damned" may enter any church and receive shelter and food. Carl found the whole cultural convention nonsensical but useful.

Damned is difficult to obtain, and also applies automatically to anyone — crawler or NPC — who has entered The Nothing and survived. Li Na carries it, and was the fallback plan if the primary attempt failed; Samantha carries it too, and it was her bite on the handle that cracked the Ultima Corp DungeonWerx Municipal Doorway Portal into the Temple of Khepri. Mordecai, Tipid, and Rosetta were all certain the trick would work.

Role

The loophole that lets a heathen raiding party open a faith-gated temple door.

Relationships

Samantha — Her damned status opens the temple door.
Li Na — Also damned; the backup door-opener.
The Nothing — Surviving it confers damned status automatically.
Tipid — Explained the real-universe law behind the mechanic.
