Story so far
Corporal Pillbox cites it while pleading for his squad's lives: they were mercenaries who never wanted to be in the dungeon in the first place, and were originally in the system guarding some of the communication gear on this planet's moon — "and that's it." They did not want to be on the planet fighting crawlers and, he insists, give no shits about who is in charge of what.
The detail is the core of his argument to Carl that there is no reason to kill them, and it works: all ten gnolls of the Gnoll Mercenary Unit survive the chapter.
