Countless tiny insects granted immortality, left burning and screaming in the walls after the blast.
The bugs at the feast turned out to be immortal like everyone else in the room. The Waffle Maker crushed them and set them on fire without killing them: most were blasted away down the endless hallway, but plenty remained embedded in the walls of the Temple of Khepri like a tapestry of stars, burning and screaming. Their combined cries were the source of the high, shrill, distant-train-whistle sound Carl heard as his hearing returned — thousands, perhaps millions, perhaps billions of tiny creatures who could not die.
When Khepri came back through the portal into Club Vanquisher, the swarm poured out with him tenfold, still on fire, covering both Carl and Princess Vinata and biting, scratching and burning them until Hellik waved them away in all directions.
Countless tiny insects, still aflame, embedded in walls or swarming in a burning cloud, emitting a shrill collective scream.
A horrifying illustration of what immortality without death actually means.
