Carl recalls the Temple of Emberus at Club Vanquisher and its high cleric Pater Coal, remembering how Coal had been taken over by The AI and seemed unable to distinguish the dungeon's narrative from the crawlers' actual circumstances. The memory arrives while Carl is contemplating stray Christmas Tinsel and the nested realities he lives inside, and it terrifies him — a temple servant, closer to the dungeon's machinery than anyone, still lost the thread.
