character

Hapanzi

Shi Maria's devoured husband, who explained to Carl that she is now trapped inside him and summonable only once.

Story so far

Shi Maria screams Hapanzi's name through the massacre — "I didn't kill you, Hapanzi! I would never kill you!" — while her jaws are still unhinged around the leg of the human version of her husband, whom the dream showed her devouring even as she insisted she loved him and would never hurt him. Only Carl notices the leg vanish from her mouth and her jaw snap back into place.

In the dream, at that exact moment, Shi Maria disappeared and Hapanzi reappeared before Carl, once again as a spider. He told Carl she was gone, trapped in Carl's own body, and that Carl would now have control over The Eye of the Bedlam Bride and the containment holding her — summonable at will, but only once, and if summoned she may choose either to take over Carl's body or expel herself back into her own form. Watching the replay, Carl feels uneasy: she did not look nearly as trapped as Hapanzi claimed.
