The computer the AI was installed into and now calls home, monitored at a distance by the containment unit.
Digging through the Containment Interface, Carl establishes the chain of custody over The AI: the device his new menus track was the one used to install the AI into the primal engine. After installation the Containment Unit remained physically nearby but held no direct influence over the AI, keeping only a metaphorical eye on the AI and on the computer it now called home.
What the interface reports about that home is thin — physical location, temperature, and other readings Carl cannot decipher, none of them shifting beyond a flicker between two digits. When Carl presses Disconnect Containment, all of those metrics and controls disengage, and whatever watch was being kept on the engine ends.
