Story so far
Rodny, also called Rod, is Mission Jones's best friend and believes change requires deliberate action. His shadowing work in IT keeps them apart for months, and Mission finds him unavailable on two visits. When they meet again, Rodny looks exhausted, his formerly styled hair cut short. He identifies the tall black cabinets in his room as computers. Jeffery refuses his request for time alone with Mission, but Rodny slips a hidden note to his friend during their handshake. The note secretly asks for help.
Rodny is held behind an unusually thick, solid door down the hall from the room where cleaning gear is collected. Mission says he cannot talk to anyone, and the explosion overshadows his appeal. Lyn and Joel want to know what has happened to him.
As the silo head's shadow, Rodny tells Paul Thurman that he knows the person Donald has identified well. He admits to childhood rage and a sense of not belonging, and has spent months confined with the books of the Legacy. He criticizes a culture that prizes individuality and separation from family. During Thurman's inquiry, Rodny completes his Rite of Initiation and receives his first order. Meanwhile, Lyn remains worried about him during the climb to The Nest.
At the Nest, Mission describes Rodny's reply as a plea for help and believes he remains imprisoned behind steel doors. Mrs. Crowe denies that he is locked up, leaving their accounts of his situation at odds.
Rodny arrives at the Crow's classroom in new white overalls, with short hair and a freshly shaved face. He commands armed men outside and carries a small gun like those used by deputies. He tells Mission he needed help the previous day: being shown that the Crow's stories were true had made him furious about what happened to the world. He says a call then revealed what the Crow had been doing.
Rodny accuses her stories, songs and sayings of making children angry, teaching them to hate their fathers and break away, and making them despise their present world by promising a better one. He says his new knowledge gives him hope after he had feared for everyone's lives. Insisting that he must act, he aims his gun at the Crow. He later tells the wounded Mission to hang on.
