Story so far
Juliette discovers the neighboring silo beyond a hill, with decayed suits and a mass of bodies outside its airlock. Inside, the air is breathable despite the stench, emergency lights remain, and the layout resembles her own silo. Solo identifies it as silo seventeen and says it no longer generates its own power. Surviving electrical lines keep farm lights and irrigation operating even as lower levels flood and structures deteriorate.
Accounts of its collapse describe an airlock opening out of sequence before a cleaning, a lower-level gas purge, and an upward-moving riot. Eren says the reason for the early opening remains uncertain and reports that Silo One shut it down as people escaped. Donald later believes that opening the airlock admitted lethal outside gas despite Anna’s intervention. Radio accounts from the aftermath describe farming survivors and an armed group taking their produce. Solo lives amid the decay for years, eventually finding a cat, while water continues rising. Juliette’s pumping work allows the water to retreat, and surviving children begin making a home again.
Jimmy hopes returning residents will restore the silo, but visiting workers remove equipment despite the promise of rebuilding. The unexplained power on level thirty-four helps operate pumps and lights. When refugees arrive from the destruction of Juliette’s silo, they bring little, claim farm plots, and rapidly strip the available food. Power from the digger restores lights to the lower facilities, but flooding still requires pumps. Looting, a fire threatening power cables, and ravaged farms make delay increasingly dangerous. Food dwindles while the residents prepare to leave.
At the coastal village, Elise says only a few residents came from Silo 17 and recalls her former silo as having just five survivors.
