Dmitry is the programmer who uncovers the five-hundred-year program and proposes lethal population reduction before modifying Tracy’s cryopod.
Dmitry deactivates the machines in the founders’ blood and reads their communications through antennas connected to the mesh network. He discovers a five-hundred-year program and says he can program his laboratory machines but cannot overcome the full outside network. He also explains the catastrophe’s apparent lateness as television broadcast delay.
Calculating that the food could sustain fifteen people for five hundred years, Dmitry proposes inoculating selected survivors and using his test nanos to kill most of the bunker population. He argues that every month of delay costs a place in the long-term population. For Tracy’s alternative plan, he modifies the cryopod’s plumbing and proposes an automatic opening when the outside machines’ timer stops, while warning that previous cryogenic subjects have not awakened.
