Shamus Chaindrive

the bugbear treasure hunter · the captain

The long-dead, paranoid bugbear treasure hunter who sank a submarine into the tomb hunting the Gate of the Feral Gods.

Story so far

Shamus Chaindrive was a great bugbear treasure hunter — paranoid and greedy, betrayed one too many times, so he crewed his expeditions only with constructs and automatons. He prized one treasure above all: the Gate of the Feral Gods, said to be buried in the Necropolis of Anser. Vowing never to surface until he had it, he sank his great submarine, the Akula, and spent nearly twenty years finding the tomb, docking against an underwater entrance beside its main chamber.

He found rivals already there — a young mage burrowing in, and a colony of Dirigible Gnomes settled nearby — and unleashed his greatest weapon, the stasis-stored sentinel Ruckus, to kill all competitors. Long dead now, Chaindrive left Ruckus circling the island until the day Carl's meddling seemingly reactivated its original kill-order.

Appearance

A bugbear (long dead); no living description given, remembered only through his automatons and submarine.

Role

The dead architect of the water quadrant's threats — the Akula submarine and the sentinel Ruckus — and an early seeker of the Gate.

Gate of the Feral Gods — The buried artifact he obsessively hunted for twenty years.
Akula — His great submarine, sunk against the tomb, now the water quadrant's 'castle.'
Ruckus — The sentinel automaton he built and unleashed to slaughter rival treasure-seekers.
Dirigible Gnomes — The gnome colony he found already competing for the tomb's treasures.
