Toraline Root Vegetable

the yam · the sweet potato · mystery tuber

A rare, foul-tasting lava-grown tuber gifted by the pacifist NFC sponsor, its purpose a mystery.

Story so far

The Toraline Root Vegetable arrives — bafflingly — in a Silver Benefactor Box from the new pacifist sponsor, the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network. Resembling a sweet potato or yam, it's a Very Rare alchemy material that grows only in lava-covered dirt, tastes (per its own description) like dogshit, and has almost no market value. Mordecai is stumped: he's seen it used in specialty salves for scaled creatures, but its appearance in a costly silver box makes no sense — he muses it could be for a potion, an explosive, an inside joke, or even an alien marriage proposal.

Both he and Carl resolve to comb their recipe lists (the cookbook and Mordecai's scratch pad) to decode why an anti-crawl charity would send it. Carl thanks the "mystery aliens" for the yam and pockets it.
