The Book of Lore
The Bahamas Book of Lore catalogs the region's monsters by rarity and identifies Shi Maria as an alias of a unique creature with permanent disabling attacks.
Story so far
Carl earlier searches the volume for monk seals but finds no entry. After Samantha names her captor, he uses the index and finds Shi Maria in a sub-index of alternate names within the final unique-monster section.
The illustrated entry shows a screaming spider woman and lists many aliases, including the Screamer, the Reviled, Kwaku's Love, the Corrupted Paramour, and the Bedlam Bride. It also reveals special attacks capable of causing permanent insanity and permanent blindness.
The book provides enough warning to make Mordecai favor abandoning Samantha, but Carl instead uses it to begin planning the capture.
