A mile-wide underground repair trainyard, one of many, now overrun by a critical mass of festering ghouls.
Substation E — formally Station and Repair Hub E — is one of the Iron Tangle's giant underground trainyards, reached when Carl drives the Nightmare Express through a station-repair portal. A washed-out, spotlit chamber a mile from portal to fence, ringed by prison-like watchtowers and served by a baseball-field-sized turntable and numbered service bays, it is the backstage where cars are junked and engines recycled. Carl reasons there must be at least twenty such yards to service the floor's nine-thousand-plus stairwells.
This one is dying: thousands of Festering Ghouls have massed against the wall and shoved it down, overwhelming the dwarven porters and grapples out front, torching the brutalist Iron Tangle Substation E building. The party escapes via Widget's turntable onto the employee line, past the burning yard, learning it is being abandoned for the ghoul-free Yard A.
A vast, high-ceilinged underground trainyard washed in random spotlights, a mile deep, full of switching tracks, corrugated service-bay awnings, prison-style watchtowers, and a giant rotating turntable; a brutalist concrete substation building burns at its gate.
