Herot's cookbook theory that quests get easier when a crawler deliberately breaks NPCs out of their thin false reality.
The Worn Path Method is a survival theory from Herot's 16th-edition cookbook essay: that the biological, non-autonomous NPCs are the dungeon world's weakest link, and that quests and puzzles yield far more readily when a crawler deliberately breaks the fourth wall — asking NPCs questions, then challenging them, "kind but firm," when they can't explain things they should know. Herot deems the technique cruel but necessary. Carl tests it on Madison, exposing her paper-thin false memories about "Yard A" and her apartment until she yields the truth of the Station Mimic trap.
A written cookbook technique, expressed through pointed, fourth-wall-breaking questioning of NPCs.
A cookbook-derived tactic for cracking NPC-gated quests, applied by Carl this floor.
