The Catalans

the Catalan village

A small, insular Spanish fishing colony on a promontory near Marseilles, home to Mercédès and Fernand.

Story so far

The Catalans is an ancient colony of sea-gypsies who quitted Spain centuries ago and settled on a bare promontory beside Marseilles, keeping their own tongue, costume, and custom of intermarriage. In one of its whitewashed, half-Moorish houses live Mercédès and her cousin Fernand. It is here that Fernand presses his hopeless suit and Edmond comes courting on the day of his return.

Appearance

A single-street village of small sunburned houses coated with whitewash like Spanish posadas, half Moorish and half Spanish, clinging to a bare, weather-worn promontory by the sea.

Role

Home of Mercédès and Fernand; the insular world that shapes them.

Relationships

Marseilles — The great port beside which this foreign colony has kept itself apart for centuries.
