GrayCris's remnant-mine-in-disguise; its destruction is narrowly averted, though it remains derelict with one combat bot loose aboard.
The 'terraforming' facility is exposed as GrayCris's illegal strange-synthetics and alien-remnant mine, built to be guarded by combat bots (hostiles) and then left to collapse into the planet, erasing all evidence, once abandoned. Only GoodNightLander Independent's tractor array kept it aloft, which is why GrayCris's assassins signaled a combat bot to fly a work zipper out and wreck the array. Don Abene's crew foils this, knocking the zipper off course and saving the array with seconds to spare, so the facility survives, still derelict and now with at least one combat bot still active aboard.
Before the escape, Murderbot harvested the diggers' logs from the geo pod, the proof of GrayCris's crimes. The facility's storm-wrapped corridors have cost the team dearly: Hirune's abduction, Ejiro's injury, the assassins' treachery, and finally the death of Miki aboard the fleeing shuttle.
A vast derelict platform in a perpetual purple-gray electrical storm, its dim corridors now scorched and battle-damaged, its tractor array intact overhead, a lone combat bot still prowling within.
The book's primary setting: a storm-wrapped derelict mine whose destruction is narrowly prevented at great human cost.
