The Forbidden Song

the reaper song · the song of the vale · Eo's song

The forbidden song of vale and reaper, punishable by death, that Eo sings as her act of defiance.

Story so far

The forbidden song is a mournful lament of distant vales, a swinging reaper, lost lovers, and chains broken against gold's iron reins, one of a single song and dance the Society makes punishable by death. Darrow's father made it his last, and Darrow had heard it only once before Eo sings it under the lash in the Common, choosing death to voice it. Replayed on the holoCan alongside her hanging, it turns her into a martyr and seems to glitch the broadcast, its chorus, "Down in the vale, hear the reaper swing," lingering as a seed of rebellion.

Appearance

A quiet, mournful melody, soft and true, likened to the wind wailing through abandoned mineshafts.

Role

The forbidden lament that becomes Eo's weapon and rallying cry.
