The Laurel

Laurel of productivity

The Society's quarterly prize of luxury and food awarded to the top mining clan, a carrot to keep the Reds grasping.

Story so far

The Laurel is a small gilt branch awarded once a quarter to the most productive of Lykos's twenty-four clans, carrying with it more food than one can eat, burners, imported quilts, sugar, fruit, and quality swill. Gamma has held it for generations. Eo sees it clearly as the carrot the Society dangles just beyond reach so the Reds know how little they can change their lot; Darrow chases it with certainty, only to watch Podginus award it to Gamma once more despite Lambda's record pull.

Appearance

A small branch painted in fake gold that sparkles nonetheless, pinched between the Magistrate's fingers.

Role

The Society's coveted productivity prize and instrument of control over the clans.

Relationships

Gamma — The clan that has held it for as long as anyone can remember.
Darrow — The prize he risked his life to win, and lost to Gamma.
Society — The order that dangles it to keep the Reds competing and obedient.
