The enslaved students who broke their vows and now roam free and shunned — the wild, willing core of Darrow's new autonomous army.
The Oathbreakers, called the Shamed, are students who were enslaved in the war and then broke the oaths that bound them, choosing to roam the winter woods free and doubly shunned rather than serve. Scrappy liars and cheats who would ruin their futures before bruising their knees, they are exactly what Darrow needs: followers, not slaves. Rejecting the slavery that once enslaved them, he recruits ten of them — led by the cold Milia — by offering food, furs, purpose, and equality: he digs the shit pit too, and cuts whoever cuts them.
Cloaked in white and gray wolfskins, faces painted with bird dung and clay like spectral winter beasts, they become the spearhead of Darrow's guerrilla campaign, striking Mars's slave columns in silence and freeing captives to swell their ranks — a willing pack that is the first real shape of Eo's dream of an army beyond the Society.
A ragged, scrappy band of freed slaves in white and gray wolfcloaks, faces painted white and gray with dung and clay, moving as spectral winter beasts through the snow.
Darrow's free army of shamed ex-slaves, the willing core of his rebellion in miniature.
