Haemanthus

haemanthus flower

A rare flower Eo leaves after a death, a small emblem of grief, tenderness, and quiet defiance.

Story so far

The haemanthus is a flower that recurs as Eo's private token of mourning. As a child she tucked a haemanthus bud into Darrow's father's left workboot at his hanging, and later left another in the dirt at Darrow's own door the night he wept for a hanged boy and his mother. Twice she has brought flowers after a death, marking her tenderness and her wordless resistance to a Society that forbids the Reds even to bury their dead.
