Fading Dirge

the Fading Dirge

The Reds' mourning rite of fists beating chests ever slower until, like the dead heart, they beat no more.

Story so far

The Fading Dirge is the mourning ritual of the Reds of Lykos, a thumping of fists against chests that begins fast as a racing heartbeat and slows, beat by beat, until it stops entirely and the mourners disperse, mimicking a heart falling still. The colony performs it for Eo after her hanging, thousands of fists fading into the wail of the old tunnels, as they once did for a hanged boy and his mother in Darrow's childhood.

Appearance

Thousands of fists beating against chests in unison, slowing gradually to silence.

Role

The Reds' communal rite of grief for the executed dead.
