The cold mountain House of the death-god, ruled by the Jackal, whose burned, teeth-braided emissaries wield ion weapons.
House Pluto is the House of the underworld death-god, and — by every sign Darrow reads — the House of the Jackal. Its emissary Lilath arrives from the south a burned, mutilated thing: a mountain rider on a small, lean horse fattened with cold-climate clothing, missing fingers seared shut by ion weapons, her braids clattering with human teeth, her ring the cypress mourning tree of Pluto with roots leaking into the ground. She carries the Jackal's mark on the Reaper — offering fifty ionBlades for Darrow alive or dead — and warns he will be dead before winter by one hand or another.
Pluto emerges as the war's darkest power, a House remade in its master's cruelty, ranging the burning south while Mars consolidates the north.
